Welcome to Roncalli Primary School and SonShine Patch. We are an Early Learning Center striving to instill Catholic values and academic excellence by nurturing mind, body and spirit. We believe that each child is unique and a child of God. We also believe that parents are the first educators of their children and as educators we are called to assist parents in fulfilling their responsibility in faith formation. Thus we work closely with parents to teach the faith and ensure each child’s social, emotional, cognitive and physical needs are met.
Roncalli Primary School serves preschool age children , 3-5 years, with five preschool rooms and primary age children with two- three sections each of grades K, 1 and 2. We have an average class size of 18 students.
Our curriculum is rich in faith formation, incorporated throughout the day. We provide a language rich literacy program enhanced with daily writing experiences and math curriculum aimed to meet the needs of all learners.
Roncalli Primary School is both North Central Association Accredited and accredited under the South Dakota Department of Education. Regular staff development days are built in to the calendar to ensure staff has time for professional development.
The school was established by St. Mary’s Catholic Church in 1912. In 1980 St. Mary’s Elementary School and Sacred Heart Elementary School along with Roncalli High School consolidated to form the Aberdeen Catholic School System. Kindergarten was added at this time, and in 1988 the Roncalli SonShine Patch Preschool and daycare program began. The name of the school was changed In 2003 to Roncalli Primary School.
