STREAM is an offshoot of STEM- Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. It is a cross-curricular style of educating that engages students and allows a higher level of learning to occur. At Aberdeen Catholic Schools Systems (ACSS) we recognize the relevance of STEM, but want to take it two steps further by adding Religion and Arts into our STEM program. That is where the term STREAM comes from.
Over the 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 school years, Aberdeen Catholic Schools, in collaboration with Northern State University, will train our teachers to become STEM certified. This will ensure that our school is fully trained in STEM. By the Fall of 2018 we will become the first pre-K through 12th grade school in the state to become STEM certified. In order to make STREAM happen, our school will be needing contributions. Please consider making a donation!
Take a look around our STREAM webpage to discover more information about STREAM and how Aberdeen Catholic Schools plan to make this new program possible.
WHO will STREAM affect?
STREAM will affect all of our Roncalli students, teachers, families, faculty and community.
WHAT does STREAM stand for?
STREAM stands for Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.
WHEN will STREAM be used in Roncalli?
Our PreK-6 teachers will begin the certification process through NSU in Fall 2016 and our 7-12 teachers begin in Fall 2017. By Fall 2018 our plan is to be the first PreK-12 STREAM certified school in the state of South Dakota.
WHERE will STREAM be implemented?
STREAM will be system-wide in the Aberdeen Catholic School System. In addition to our STREAM certification we are working towards a SMARTLab at our Elementary and eventually all campuses which will further immerse our students into cross curricular education.
WHY is a STREAM education so valuable?
Our world is constantly changing and long gone are the days when lecturing students for hours is deemed effective. Our teachers are educating students for future jobs than may not even exist today. Instead of simply memorizing facts and figures, a STREAM education allows students to work collaboratively in real-world applications. This authentic approach allows learning to become relevant to each student and produces global thinkers who are ready for a world and workforce outside of our school.
However, our core belief of instilling Catholic values is at the very heart of everything that we do. STREAM allows a natural extension of this by asking our students to reflect over assignments and projects and relate them to Jesus Christ. This seamless integration of religion with traditional classes is what makes STREAM and Roncalli meld together - everything that we do starts with and leads back to God.
