Christian Service at Roncalli Junior and Senior High
"If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another's feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do." (Jn.13:14-15)
As disciples of Christ, we are called to carry out the mandate that Jesus sets before us in the thirteenth chapter of John. Spending time in service offers the students the opportunity for some practical application of Christian values, while striving to strengthen the parish, school and community. Students will demonstrate Christian witness through serving others. Through this experience, students will develop a sense of responsibility for others and learn that true Christian charity is giving without expectation of anything in return. Students will have a deepened awareness that service, for a Christian, is a way of life. Students will have the opportunity to reflect on their service through written reflections each quarter or trimester.
Each student is required to spend a determined amount of hours per quarter or trimester in some form of service to the parish, school and community, as approved by the instructor.
Per trimester: 7th grade – 6 hours (18 total), 8th grade – 8 hours (24 total)
Per quarter: freshmen – 6 hours (24 total), sophomores – 7 hours (28 total)
juniors – 8 hours (32 total), *seniors – 15 hours (60 total)
*Seniors are able to use some class time to fulfill their 60 hours. Senior servants are utilized every Tuesday
After students have completed an approved service, they must go on line and complete a Google form set up by their religion teacher. These forms are to be recorded within a week of the service performed. A phone number or email of supervisor must be noted for service to be counted. Pictures can be taken and emailed to teacher as proof that service was actually performed. Supervisors will be called randomly to check on the experience that took place. At the end of each quarter or trimester, students will receive a completion grade.
All service must be approved by members of the Roncalli Religion Department.
Individuals or organizations having service needs should first contact a member of the department.
Students involved in extracurricular in which they will receive a letter are not eligible for service hours for their involvement.
Family chores are a normal part of being in a family and are not acceptable. Exceptions can be made for service to family that goes beyond regular family duties.
A percentage of pre-school (summer) hours will be accepted with proper documentation.
Some form of service must be given during each quarter – although some service can carry over into another quarter. Students are asked to keep track of any summer service to be used in acquiring the Presidential Volunteer Service Award. More information about this award can be found online.
St. Theresa's Prayer
Christ has no body now but yours, No hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which He looks with compassion on this world. Yours are the feet with which He walks to do good. Yours are the hands with which He blesses all the world. You are His body now. Amen.
